Supervised parenting time is conducted in the community in North Brisbane.
During COVID 19 lockdown in April/May 2020, we chose to take families into the community for supervised parenting time due to restrictions. We didn’t return to a building as families preferred to be in the outdoors.
What is supervised parenting time in the community?
You are spending time with your children outside. In a park, library, shopping, fishing, museum, ten pin bowling, beach, lunch or dinner in a restaurant or other venues agreed by both parents/carers. Your children and you will be accompanied by a supervisor. Supervised parenting time in the community is for a minimum of two (2) hours per session.
There are a number of reasons why supervised parenting time may be appropriate. It may be that a parent has not seen their child/ren for some time and a gradual introduction in a neutral, friendly space is suggested. It may be that a parent has no suitable place to spend time with their children. A child may have expressed anxiety about seeing a parent alone, and sometimes the Court has concerns for a child’s safety.
Depending on how long it takes both parents to register, will determine how long the process takes. Confidentiality does not allow us to disclose if the other parent/carer has completed registration or their intake appointment.
NEXT STEPS
Once parents/carers have completed their intake appointments, we follow our service process which takes approximately two weeks. Parents/carers will be contacted in writing via email or letter if they have been accepted or not, into the service. If accepted a day and time for the first supervised parenting session is organised. If not accepted into the Children’s Contact Service, a parent/carer will be referred to their lawyer or referring agency.
A child orientation, for children, is conducted with the parent/carer the children live with. Child orientation takes place prior to the first supervised parenting time. We may begin after these steps have been completed.
